The next best thing to going to Africa is to read (compulsively) this account by Paul Theroux of his overland expedition from Cairo to Capetown. (A) Entertainment WeeklyĪrmchair travelers will wish the book went on twice as long - and that is something, considering that the book runs more than 400 pages. The sometime novelist is at his most masterful with DARK STAR SAFARI. Reading Theroux may make you cancel your plane tickets and settle in at home instead for a great read. But listening to him recount his adventures. Theroux, one suspects, could be a headache to travel with resourceful, courageous and indefatigable, as well as crusty, opinionated and contradictory. Library Journal Starredįew recent books provide such a litany of Africa's ills, even as they make one fall in love with the continent. No mere tale of travel mishaps.Safari is Swahili for journey, and Theroux's is truly fantastic. His encounters with the natives, aid workers and occasional tourists make for rollicking entertainment, even as they offer a sobering look at the social and political chaos in which much of Africa finds itself. Engagingly written, sharply observed another winner from Theroux.

Engagements are fast and brutal, with one headshot or a few body shots securing the kill, and so the key skill is knowing where the enemy is rather than twitch aiming. This makes Siege a game where the defending team has an obvious advantage – the enemy must come to them – but the attackers can choose how and when to go about it. The number of ways a given position can be approached is enormous. In addition to this, breach charges can be used to blow out windows or non-reinforced walls. Boarded-up windows and doors can be destroyed by gunfire, or melee attacks, and bullets will go through all manner of surfaces – wood, glass and certain types of wall. Such flexibility of approach flows out of the destruction system at the core of Siege’s gunplay. If attackers are rushing past the wall next to you, providing it’s not reinforced, you can give them the surprise of their soon-to-be-over lives by unloading through it. They can hang upside down, smash a hole through a boarded-up window and shoot from that position. In Siege, the attacking operators can rappel up and down the building, enter through windows or certain walls, and once inside even blow through the floors. The most striking aspect of Siege is its buildings: each level is constructed around one or more structures, which have to be assaulted by an attacking team and held by the defenders. The book opens in 2004 with one of Kintu’s descendants being brutally attacked and it is not long before we see the curse come to pass in a variety of ways. Ntwire, the boy’s birth father, curses Kintu and all his descendants. The curse is placed on the family of Kintu Kidda, the Ppookino of Buddu Province, when in a hasty moment he hits his adopted son. Kintu ( Kwani Trust, 2014) tells a story that spans from 1750 pre-colonial Buganda Kingdom to 2004 independent Uganda. Until we read Kintu and realise that such a brilliant piece of writing could never have been rushed. We reach into that part of our brain that always doubts that we will make it at this writing thing and we confirm that we will not if writing a novel takes that long. When upcoming writers like me hear that Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi started writing Kintu in 2003, we despair. Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi’s ‘Kintu’ Made Me Want to Tell Our Storiesīy Africa in Words Guest on 12 November, 2014 › Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi’s ‘Kintu’ Made Me Want to Tell Our Stories The prequel was more of an introduction to our primary characters. In essence, it is more of a coming of age piece of fiction than Doukyuusei was. Kusakabe and Sajou are in the midst of growing up and deciding upon their career paths, and the manga attempts to shed light on their issues and troubles as they do so. Speaking of fleshed out, both our mains as well as Hara-sensei get some development. I will say that the backgrounds this time around seem to be a bit more fleshed out. The anatomy is a bit weird in some places. It is the same as it ever was – stylistic, original, pretty, but still lacking in details. lighthearted, pleasant story at heart, with a bit more plot that manages to raise my opinion of this instalment as a whole. What Sotsugyousei does differently from its predecessor is that it sheds a small amount of light on the difficulties of being a gay couple in Japan, although probably not as seriously as it could have. Yes, our two main leads are still very much in love and still very much pushing forward. Needless to say, we are reunited with Sajou and Kusakabe, as well as Hara, for some more shenanigans regarding their relationship. As such, it's naturally pertinent for you to read Doukyuusei before progressing to Sotsugyousei. Sotsugyousei is a yaoi manga by Nakamura Asumiko, and is a direct sequel to Doukyuusei. In this novel, the author has elegantly and brilliantly guided me through the difficult moments in the life of a British family that is trying to cope with the complexity of the heartwrenching disease Alzheimer’s.
